CWGC Burials at Poole (Hamworthy) St. Michael's churchyard

ADAMS George Rex Lance Bombardier No. 14484868 Royal Artillery

George was born in 1927 in Colaba (Bombay) India where his father William Thomas Adams was serving with the Indian Army. His father had married
George's mother Lily Ada Saunders in 1916 in Christchurch and they all sailed from Bombay to Liverpool arriving on board the S.S. Castalia on
26th March 1937. In 1939 they had named their house "Castalia" in Woodland Avenue, Hamworthy where George's father was then a store keeper at the Naval
Dockyard. I found nothing about George's death at Poole on 17th October 1946, but he was then aged 19 and was buried on the 21st.

BARNES Frederick Gunner No. 875019 198 Orkney Heavy Regiment Royal Artillery

Born at Hamworthy in 1919 son of Walter William Barnes, a clay pit worker who died in 1927, and his wife Eva Maud Scott who died early in 1940. In
1921 the family were living at Bennett's Place, Hamworthy. Army records say Frederick died at sea on 18th July 1940, and his burial record says it was
on board H M Hospital ship Varna which was operating out of Scapa Flow, but I found no actual cause of death. He was buried on the 24th July.

BROOKS Albert Reginald Private No. 5494205 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment

Born at Upham, Hampshire about June 1910 son of Albert Brooks, a farm carter, and his wife Harriet Perry. He married Lillian Violet Wilkins at
Blandford in January 1938, and he died on 18th November 1941 aged 31, before being buried on the 24th. Trees on Ancestry suggest he died at
Lockerbie, Scotland, cause of death not known, but I could not find an Army record to confirm that. Lillian lived at 18 Harbour Road Parkstone, and on
22nd January 1944 married Richard John Singleton.

ELLIOTT Robert William Private No. 5675542 4th Battalion Somerset (Prince Albert's Own) Light Infantry

Born at Poole on 19th January 1918 son of Thomas Elliott, a railway station foreman, and his wife Frances Milbourne. In 1939 they were living at 104
Garland Road, Upton, Poole where Robert was working as a lorry driver. He died of war wounds from fighting in north west Europe on 29th July 1944,
and was buried on May 3rd. His younger brother Thomas George Elliott was killed in 1941 - below.

ELLIOTT Thomas (or Norman) George Driver No. 2597985 11th Armoured Division Royal Corps of Signals.

Born at Poole about June 1921 son of Thomas Elliott, a railway station foreman, and his wife Frances Milbourne. Thomas died on 23rd June 1941 and
I do not know why but his burial record on 28th is in the name of Norman George Elliott and says he was living / serving at Kirkby Moorside,
Yorkshire, and his death was registered at East Dereham, Norfolk, but cause of his death not found. His older brother Robert above died in 1944.

FOOT Mervyn Henry John Gunner No. 1432497 522 Coastal Battery Royal Artillery

Born at Poole about November 1921 son of Edward John Foot, a clay pit worker, and his wife Lilian Mabel Diffey who lived at 17 Carters Avenue,
Hamworthy. They had married at Hamworthy on 2nd August 1919. Mervyn seems to be missing in 1939 census and I found nothing about his death at Poole
on 15th October 1946. He was aged 25 and was buried on the 19th.

JOYCE Frederick William Tidby Private No. 19154 Hampshire Regiment

Born at Poole on 19th April 1877 son of James Henry Joyce, a pottery worker at a tile factory, and his wife Maria Hounsell who lived at 10 Ivor Road,
Hamworthy. Frederick married Elsie May Cleal at Poole in October 1896, and worked as a carpenter and joiner. He enlisted first in the Royal Navy on
9th August 1901 serving until 15th January 1908, but is missing from the 1911 census - Elsie is then living in Southsea, Hampshire with her three

1919, and was buried on the 20th.

April 1920. In 1921 they were living at Cott Lake Road, Hamworthy. In 1942 Ivor was a ground worker with Fighter Command at RAF Warmwell, Dorset which
was a key fighter station in the Battle of Britain. It is believed Ivor was killed there on 8th April 1942 aged 19 during a German air raid on the
airfield. He was buried on the 13th.

SKINNER Hubert Able Seaman No. 98795 HMS Osborne Royal Navy

Born at Lychett Minster, Dorset on 10th June 1861 son of William Skinner, a labourer who died in 1907, and his wife Sarah Baker who died in 1876.
Hubert enlisted in the Royal Navy on 2nd January 1877 and served continuously until he died. He married Julia Ann Berridge Gale at Parkstone
on 21st May 1888. Julia died in April 1917 aged 55, and I wonder if that was a factor in Hubert's death whilst on leave on 21st April 1917. He is
recorded in Naval records as having hanged himself during a fit of temporary insanity. He was living at 3 Stanley Cottages, Wimborne Road,
Poole, and was buried on April 27th. His probate issued to his son Stanley (a gunner No. 13505 R.M.A.) on 1st November 1917 was for £155.

were living at 4 Bakery Cottages, Lower Hamworthy. Alfred died at Rifle Brigade camp at Falmouth, Cornwall on 9th November 1916, and the Army
